YOU ARE A EUROPEAN SCIENTIST OR PHD STUDENT

BEWARE : It is essential that you and your family have an health coverage during your stay in France, either by a private insurance or covered by a Social Security scheme.

The French social security system matriculation is not automatic and you will be eligible only if you meet certain requirements.

If you are eligible to the French social security system, you need to contact the CPAM where you live.

Before leaving your country, it is strongly recommended:

  • Ask for your European Health Insurance Card. This will cover your healthcare expenses while you are registered with Social Security in France.
  • If you still have social security entitlement in your previous European country of residence please requst the S1 form to the social security to enjoy the Social Security benefits of your previous country of residence in Europe.

 

With a French employment contract

You are eligible for Universal Healthcare Protection under French Social Security from the first day of employment in France. You will need to register with the Caisse Primaire d’Assurance Maladie (CPAM) in the Rhône département. Children under 18 are eligible for Universal Healthcare Protection under French Social Security. You will need to register your children at the same time as you.

Your spouse and children over the age of 18 y.o. may be eligible for Universal Healthcare Protection (PUMA) under French Social Security after 3 months residing in France and only if they can provide backup documents certifying they do not have any health coverage in another European country. They will need to register individually with the Caisse Primaire d’Assurance Maladie (CPAM) in the Rhône département.

Without a French employment contract

As a non-salaried researcher, you (and your family) may be eligible for Universal Healthcare Protection under French Social Security after three months of residence in France and only if you can provide backup documents certifying you do not have any health coverage in another European country. You will need to register individually with the Caisse Primaire d’Assurance Maladie (CPAM) in the Rhône département.

PhD students registered in a French higher education institution without a French working contract

If you are under 28, you can benefit from the student social security system. The student healthcare matriculation with SMERRA or LMDE (the only 2 organisations in charge) will be done at the same time as your university registration. 

If you are over 28, you can be matriculated to the regular Universal Heathcare Protection through CPAM in order to be covered from your 1st day studying in France. You must contact CPAM du Rhône to process the matriculation.
