Complementary health insurance

Signing up for a complementary health insurance

While optional, we recommend that researchers benefitting from the French national healthcare system take out complementary health coverage so as to be better reimbursed for their medical costs. Indeed, French social security covers only a portion of your medical fees. As a result, the remaining non-reimbursed fees (which you are responsible for paying) may be relatively onerous, depending on the particular medical care provided (for instance: a visit to the dentist, a hospitalization or the purchase of prescription eyeglasses).

You may be able to sign up for a collective complementary insurance policy through your employer. You should contact your laboratory for information on any complementary insurance made available to laboratory employees.

If your employer does not offer complementary insurance, you can take out complementary health coverage through a private insurance company (mutuelle), to further cover medical fees not reimbursed by the national healthcare system.

The reimbursement rates offered by the various private insurance companies may vary. For this reason, you should carefully compare the different coverage offers to choose the most advantageous policy.

Our partner insurance offer

EURAXESS France has negotiated a special reduced rate for complementary health insurance for its researchers with the insurance company ABC Assurances/AXA.

ABC Assurances/AXA offers two levels of coverage (F100 or F200), depending on your needs. These offers have the advantage of providing you with complementary coverage starting on your first day of work, without you having to await your definitive affiliation to the French social security system.

For further information, you can contact ABC Assurances by e-mail or by telephone (Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays) on: +33 (0)3 81 84 22 22. An English-speaking representative is available on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. To sign up, you will be requested to provide your EURAXESS France “researcher number”, as well as the dates of your research stay.
